指具有嘌呤核的碱基化合物。在生物体内也有以游离态出现的，但是多数与嘧啶碱基一样，作为核酸、核苷酸和核苷的组成成分而存在，其他还有可可碱和咖啡碱等生物碱。最重要的是在核酸（ RNA， DNA）中含有的腺嘌呤和鸟嘌呤。它们也是低分子核苷酸如 ATP、 NAD和 FAD等辅酶的组成成分。
