Biomedical research has never been more intellectually exciting or practically important to society. Ironically, pursuing a career as a biomedical scientist has never been more difficult. Here I provide unvarnished advice for young biomedical scientists on the difficulties that lie ahead and on how to find the right laboratories for training in the skills that you will need to succeed. Although my advice is geared towards succeeding in the United States, many aspects apply to other countries.

Jon Yewdell graduated from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, in 1975 and received his MD and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in 1981. After 4 years as Assistant Professor at the Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, USA, he joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in 1987, establishing a joint laboratory with his long time collaborator Jack Bennink. Their laboratory focuses on the cell biology and immunology of recognition of viruses by antibodies and CD8+ T cells. The laboratory has graduated 27 postdoctoral fellows, over half of whom have established their own laboratories in academic settings.
