以卵越冬的昆虫，所产当年孵化的非休眠卵，称为非越冬卵。在家蚕中，通常越冬卵的浆膜着色，所以日本称此“黑种”，而非越冬卵不着色，日本称为“生种”。把原来是越冬的卵施行人工孵化法处理，让它在年内孵化，称为人工不越冬卵。二化性的家蚕，在胚胎时期采用低温（15℃）和暗处保管可出现非越冬卵。
