Recent years have seen a renewed interest in brain anatomy in the neuroimaging community. Developments in techniques for structural MR acquisition and analysis have opened new opportunities for structural mapping of the living human brain. For example, high-resolution MR imaging can be used for “in vivo histology”, techniques such as voxel-based morphometry can be used to localise structural variation across populations, diffusion imaging provides information on system-level anatomical connectivity. fMRI studies are increasingly making use of the information provided by such structural mapping techniques in order to discover the anatomical substrate for observed functional effects.
