Microdissection and microcloning involve the physical removal of chromosome fragments and the cloning of the collected DNA using specialized microprocedures. Microdissection represents the most direct method for recovery of cloned DNA from an individual chromosome region providing banks of microclones for the genome analysis of the targeted region. A number of chromosome regions have been micro- dissected and successfully microcloned from a wide range of species, including human (1 –5 ), mouse (6 –8 ), Drosophila (9 ), and, most recently, plants (10 ).
