脊椎动物的生殖腺的发生中，原则上是由来源于腹膜的皮质部和中胚层性细胞的侵人而生出髓质部，在卵巢里发生分化时，则后者退化成为中空器官。这个中央膛就是卵巢腔。在鱼类、两栖类等这种形态，仍然残留在成体的卵巢中，卵巢中央部成为卵巢腔，排出的卵也有进入到这里来的例子。但与此不同，也有的种类生出二次的卵巢腔。
