Assaying Interleukin-8

互联网

981
Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a member of the rapidly expanding chemokine family, which consists of a large number of small (8–10 kDa) secreted proteins with the capacity to act as leukocyte chemoattractants (1 ). Chemokines are crucial mediators of inflammation as they are able to enhance migration selectively of specific types of leukocytes from blood vessels into damaged and/or infected tissue, where the leukocytes will effect elimination of the infectious agent and healing of any tissue damage. However, inappropriate or chronic triggering of the inflammatory response can lead to excessive infiltration of normal tissue by various types of leukocytes, ultimately culminating in inflammation-based pathologic states (2 , 3 ).
