细胞、组织对交流电显示电容性电抗。另外，在用细胞内电极给膜通直流电时，膜电位的变化大致是按指数函数发生的，达到恒定水平也需要一定时间。这是因为细胞膜具有电容，但从根本上说，是因为细胞膜系蛋白质及双层磷脂构成的膜，极薄且难以导电的缘故。膜可以用并联的电容和电阻连成的等价回路来表现。多数细胞的膜电容值一般在1μ F/cm2 左右，而蛙骨骼肌纤维的膜电容竟达该数值的 10倍，这是因为蛙骨骼肌中小细胞系统发达所致。膜电容的大小无论对动作电位的建立和兴奋的传导速度都是有影响的。
