Topical Gene Therapy for Pulmonary Diseases with PEI-DNA Aerosol Complexes

Different methods for delivery of genes to the lungs such as intravenous injection, and nasal, or intratracheal instillation have been reported in animal models. However, these strategies are invasive or they may not distribute the material uniformly throughout pulmonary tissues. Currently, the technique used for administering gene delivery vectors to the lungs is mainly through injections by the use of computed tomography-guided percutaneous fine-needle injections or bronchoscopy (1 ,2 ). This procedure is very invasive and targets a very restricted region in the lungs.
