Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a key process in wound healing. During the angiogenic phase of injured tissue repair, epithelial cells sprout and branch from preexisting vessels, evolving into a network of new capillaries. This formation of vasculature, necessary for normal granulation tissue, is tightly regulated spatially and temporally. Blood capillaries regress in a relatively short time after tissue integrity is restored.
