In all rodent models of erythrocytic-stage malaria infections, the T-cell response to the parasite has been shown to be crucial for the development of protective immunity (1 -5 ) and in some cases is thought to play a role in the pathology of malaria (6 ,7 ). To determine which effector functions of T cells may be important in controlling parasites or in causing disease, it is necessary to determine the nature of the CD4+ T-cell response in a quantitative manner.
