　　指用极微量就能使生物生长发生变化的营养物质以外的有机化合物。其中包括生长促进物质、生长抑制物质和可改变生长形态的物质。例如一般认为植物生长调节物质应该具有象生物体内的生长激素那样固有作用方式，并显现出相应的效果。植物生长激素、抗植物生长激素和上斜生长诱导物质，以及2，3，5－三碘苯甲酸、香豆素、原五叶银莲花素（anemonin）和马来酰肼等生长素的协同物质或阻碍物质，都统统可以看作是生长调节物质并用这个词，既适用于生物体内原来含有的物质，也适用于实验合成的化合物。
