The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is now a standard model organism for the dissection of eukaryotic transcriptional and translational mechanisms (e.g., 1 ). The study of the mechanism and control of eukaryotic translation requires an in vitro system that will reflect in vivo events and yet be amenable to manipulation. To this end several protocols for preparing cell-free translation systems from the yeast S. cerevisiae have been published (2 –4 ).
