Assays for Neoplastic Cell Enrichment in Bone Marrow Samples

Most hematological malignancies have clonal cells that reside in the bone marrow environment, and their analysis is critical for diagnosis (1 ). In the process of procuring a clinical sample, research samples are frequently obtained, and their prompt and appropriate management should allow for their immediate usage or storage for the pertinent research questions. Because of the co-existence of normal cells in that environment, the investigator must decide on the need or appropriateness of selection of the clonal cells. While there will be an initial investment of resources and time, it is our experience that the immediate processing of a sample results in much better material being available for future studies. Furthermore, there is usually a higher yield if the selection process is done immediately as compared to an unsorted sample that is later thawed and selected. Thus, most investigators should seriously consider the possibility of future research in stored samples and decide a priori on the best method for enhancing the value of the material.
